Scholarship Essay ContestFor years, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO has administered its annual essay contest. This year, scholarships will be offered in three categories:
- Graduating High School Seniors
- All Post-Secondary Students
- Affiliated Union Members Attending an Accredited Institution.
Please note: Scholarships available exclusively to Union Members and their families. Should you have any questions, contact Carl Dillinger at 800.242.3770.
Scholarships are awarded as follows:
- First Award: $2,000
- Second Award: $1,000
- Third Award: $500
How Can You Apply?
- Complete the application form and return it to the PA AFL-CIO by the February 28, 2003 deadline. The form can be obtained by calling Carl Dillinger at 800.242.3770.
- Write a one-thousand-five-hundred (1,500) word essay (see Topics).
- List three references, including name, address, and title. At least one reference must be from a labor organization.
- Make sure your application and essay are neatly prepared, double-spaced, and typed on regular white paper.
What Are the Essay Topics?
Category I: Graduating High School Seniors Write a descriptive essay about the life
of a union member (parent, sibling, grandparent, etc.). Explain why union membership is important to them. Give examples.
Category II: All Post-Secondary Students
What are the effects of Enron and WorldCom on working families and how can this be prevented in the future?
Category III: Affiliated Union Members Attending an Accredited Institution
What does a true voice at work mean to you?
