Self Sufficiency for Low Income Families
Congress passed legislation in February 2006 to
continue providing the “Temporary Assistance to Needy
Families” (TANF, i.e. welfare reform), the federal
government’s program to assist families move
toward self-sufficiency. These funds are used for
child care assistance, promoting job preparation,
and more.
In addition to TANF, United Way works on public policy
issues affecting state and federally funded child care,
Earned Income Tax Credits, Individual Development Accounts,
and other work support programs that help low-wage
workers achieve self-sufficiency.
United Way collaborates with the Philadelphia Welfare
Coalition and the Pennsylvania Welfare Coalitions to
advocate for policies and practices which promote self-sufficiency
and ensure protection of vulnerable individuals and
families.
