President's Newsletter: July 2008
As you breathe a sigh of relief that the summer is finally here, it may not cross your mind that nearly 5,000 children in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties are homeless and will spend their summer in a shelter, or even worse, without any shelter at all. And as we plan for the end of summer camps and ramp up for the school year to come - with newly sharpened pencils and fresh notebooks - it's also time to think about how ALL of our children will start the upcoming school year.
Getting our children prepared to enter school ready to learn is one of United Way's primary focus areas - kids who start off behind very often stay behind. Let's work together this year to help them catch up!!
Through our second annual Stuff the Bus initiative, supported by many generous donations and hundreds of volunteer hours, United Way is collecting school supplies in an effort to fill 2,000 school bags for children living in shelters in Philadelphia, Chester, Montgomery and Delaware Counties. Last year, United Way delivered over 1,000 school bags and we are looking to reach twice as many children by the start of the school year in September.
There is still time to help Stuff the Bus. Donated school supplies can be dropped off at United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Seven Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. between now and August 29th or you can volunteer to help put together the school bags. Call 215.665.2643 to volunteer or for donation pick-up.

Have a great summer.
Sincerely,

Jill Michal
