Our History

Back To Home

At United Way we believe that all children, families and adults in our region should be safe, and able to reach their full potential. Through numerous programs and agencies, United Way provides a continuum of services that support individuals and families - from infants to seniors.  That means that communities - both geographic and communities of people with common histories and characteristics - are engaged, safe and thriving.

Home Sweet Home

The dream of home ownership is often beyond the reach of many low-income people. However, United Way has a program to help to make home ownership a reality for families in our region.

Partnering with the Federal government and local business leaders, United Way’s Individual Development Account program matches every dollar saved towards a home down payment with a match of two dollars. That way, families can accumulate enough savings to purchase a home.

And, United Way helps with more than savings. To ensure the success of future homeowners, we educate them on how to balance a budget, clean up bad credit, and apply for mortgages and insurance.  Helping families achieve home ownership  creates more stable, safer neighborhoods and give low-income families a greater sense of pride and ownership. It boosts the self-esteem of individuals and communities and strengthens our region.

From Problems to Solutions

When you see blighted neighborhoods, do you wonder about a solution? United Way recognizes the need to stabilize neighborhoods and keep them safe.  We work closely with Philadelphia Neighborhood Development Collaborative to support and improve low-income neighborhoods throughout our region.

Projects range from a cutting edge technology center that will bring opportunities to youth in north Philadelphia to rehabilitated rental units for seniors, and newly constructed single-family homes that help first-time home buyers.

Improving neighborhoods, providing ample affordable housing, and keeping the streets safe by supporting neighborhood watch groups and civic organizations are paramount to creating and sustaining vibrant neighborhoods and communities.

United Way goes to work every day to make communities and neighborhoods healthy and safe.  Together, with your gift, we strengthen our region for future generations.

How Can I Help?

Have you ever wondered – “how can I help improve our community?”  Each year, United Way organizes the annual Day of Caring for our community to mobilize area business volunteers in a day of community service projects.

Last year, over 50 companies deployed 1,850 employees on a wide variety of projects.

Projects range from recording oral histories of seniors, to reading to a child in a preschool child care center, helping prepare families transitioning from a shelter to their first home, painting a mural to brighten a community, delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors, landscaping and painting.

Day of Caring service projects provide opportunities that make sustainable changes in our neighborhoods...and improves lives.
