Organized Labor and the American Red Cross teamed
up for Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD)

Local Girl Scouts and Labor
Sixteen year-old Girl Scout, Emily Wilson, member of Troop
519 at White Rock Baptist Church located in West Philadelphia,
is pursuing her Girl Scout ‘Gold’ Award.
As part of the Gold Award process, Emily must master a subject,
develop and deliver a program to her local group and the community,
and then defend her work at Girl Scouts of Southeastern PA
next March to attain the gold award.
Emily’s award subject is Organized Labor. Many young
people have no idea about the impact that organized labor
has had on our economy and culture. Knowledge about child
labor laws, workers’ rights and protections, or many
other benefits of an organized workforce is lacking. Emily
will present four three-hour session classes that cover, labor
history, financial literacy, women and work, and workplace
safety.
Emily’s mother, Janet Ryder, plans to develop a curriculum
for a Labor Education program that she hopes will eventually
become a Girl Scout badge.
