About Volunteering
Necessary Trainings and Certifications:
Session 1: This 90-minute training is designed to provide you with more information about serving as a volunteer tax preparer, instructions for completing your certification and helpful tips to make certification easier. You will also become acquainted with the Campaign for Working Families, some of our important partner agencies and the work that is done at the tax sites.
Link & Learn Online Certification Course: This online tutorial and test will take you step-by-step through tax law so that you can accurately fill out tax returns. The tutorial will take several hours, but is completed online at the volunteer’s leisure. At the end of the tutorial, the volunteer will take a test. Once s/he has passed the test, they email their certification to taxvolunteer@uwsepa.org and keep a copy for themselves.
A volunteer can choose to certify at the Basic or Intermediate level. Basic level is appropriate for first-time volunteers and those with little background in accounting. This level of certification will allow you to help most customers at our tax sites. Intermediate level certification is best for experienced volunteers or those with finance and accounting backgrounds. It will give the volunteer an opportunity to help customers with more complex tax issues.
If you are struggling with the certification course, please consider attending one of the optional tax law workshops or labs described below. They are designed to support people as they work their way through Link & Learn.
Software Training: This training will introduce volunteers to the software used at the tax sites which facilitates an efficient and accurate tax preparation process. In this training the volunteer will prepare at least two tax problems using the software and learn about the process related to finalizing a return.
Optional Trainings:
Link & Learn Labs: If you find Link & Learn challenging, don’t give up! Consider attending a Link & Learn lab where you can work independently on the certification course, but have an instructor available to answer questions or help you with challenging sections.
Basic Tax Workshop: This workshop is intended to support first time or returning volunteers who are pursuing the basic level certification course within the Link & Learn Online Certification Course. Anyone who wishes for more support can attend one of these workshops for more specific instruction and help with basic tax issues.
Intermediate Tax Workshop: Returning volunteers or tax professionals can opt to take the intermediate level Link & Learn Online Certification Course. This workshop will support them in their training on more complex tax issues.
