365 Days of Caring
For the past 18 years, United Way’s Days of Caring volunteer participation rates have continued to steadily increase. In an effort to take advantage of that caring power, United Way has expanded Days of Caring from a two day event to a year-round effort to advance the common good through volunteerism.
What is Days of Caring?
United Way’s Days of Caring is a special service project that builds partnerships between United Way, nonprofit agencies, community volunteers, and employees from area workplaces. Each year, members of United Way’s network of agencies and other participating organizations design hands-on projects for corporate volunteers. By participating, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of our region’s social service community and the work that United Way and local nonprofit agencies do every day of the year. To better balance the community needs with workplace availability, a custom Days of Caring event can be planned for your organization any day of the year.
Days of Caring offers the workplace:
- An opportunity for team building
- A proven morale booster for employees
- A chance for employees to help others through hands-on experience
- An opportunity for employees to see how agencies use campaign dollars in the community
- An opportunity for you to position your company as a good corporate neighbor and leverage your philanthropic activities

Project Opportunities
Participants in Days of Caring are typically either excused from their normal workday or asked to volunteer on Saturday to contribute their time to community projects. Volunteer opportunities are available for a full day (9:00am-4:00pm) or half day (9:00am-12:00pm or 1:00pm-4:00pm). Volunteer projects are group projects requiring a minimum of ten people from a company who are prepared to serve together at the same time and place.
- Agency Posted Opportunities (self select option): These are opportunities to connect directly with a local non-profit organization, completing projects and tasks identified by the organization as a critical need for their constituency.
- Customized Group Requests: Work with United Way staff to coordinate a customized project that meets the specific needs of your workplace.

Days of Caring: Success Stories
Upon first look at the vacant lot on 5th Street in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia, one would have thought it an insurmountable challenge to clean and level the area. The brush was wildly over grown; there was trash and debris covering the ground and a huge Mulberry tree that had sprouted in the middle of the lot. The neighbors on the block called it "The Mulberry Trash Tree" because people would just dump trash all around the tree and no one ever picked it up. In addition to all of this waste, there were also tons of broken cinder blocks, glass and concrete flooring from the basement of what used to be a home scattered all over this lot.
