365 Days of Caring

Over the past 18 years, nearly 33,000 people have made a difference in our community by helping agencies with thousands of projects during United Way's Days of Caring. Once an annual two-day event, United Way is turning Days of Caring into a year-round effort to advance the common good through corporate volunteerism.

There are too many individuals in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region going hungry… That’s why on September 9, 2011, through United 2 Feed - United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s Days of Caring signature event, in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania and Greater Philadelphia Cares, 500 volunteers filled 5,000 meal kits providing 60,000 meals to 20,000 individuals! The meals packed during this event are being used to stock local food pantries throughout the region.

  • United Way is committed to this effort because:

    • A child can’t perform well in school if she’s hungry
    • Working families still need help putting nutritious food on their tables
    • Seniors shouldn’t have to choose between a hot meal and their medication

    Vanguard - Hunting Park

Upon first look at the vacant lot on 5th Street in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia, one would have thought it an insurmountable challenge to clean and level the area. The brush was wildly over grown; there was trash and debris covering the ground and a huge Mulberry tree that had sprouted in the middle of the lot. The neighbors on the block called it "The Mulberry Trash Tree" because people would just dump trash all around the tree and no one ever picked it up. In addition to all of this waste, there were also tons of broken cinder blocks, glass and concrete flooring from the basement of what used to be a home scattered all over this lot. Read full story.
