The
Loaned Executive Program –
An Eye Opening, Skills Enhancing
Experience!
The 2009 United Way Campaign opened with the arrival of 28 Loaned Executives
(LE), bringing an instant infusion of hard work, focus and
dedication to the halls of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Almost double the number from the previous year, the LE’s
made it clear from day one they were here to succeed.
Each year, a number of corporations participate in the United Way LE program,
by lending or sponsoring a qualified employee (or employees)
to assist in the United Way Campaign. The LEs serve as an extension
of United Way staff and work full-time from August through
December. The LE program also includes Loaned Labor Leaders
(LLL) who support the State Employee Combined Appeal (SECA)
campaign, and LE’s who support the Combined Federal Campaign
(CFC).
By providing or sponsoring an LE, the
participating organizations make a statement that the United
Way Campaign is key to advancing the common good in our community.
It is also a commitment to the LE that their company believes
in their potential to learn, grow and become future corporate
leaders. From traders to webmasters, to caseworkers and systems
engineers, the LEs come from broad and diverse background,
representing nine organizations, and various professional fields.
According to Jill Michal, President and
CEO of UWSEPA, the Loaned Executive Program offers “a unique
and powerful opportunity for these employees to LIVE UNITED
by sharing their professional skills to bring about lasting,
positive change to our region through the workplace campaign.
I applaud our LE’s, their companies and sponsors on a job well
done.”
For the participating companies, their
employees are provided the means to impact the quality of life
in the community while experiencing a unique professional opportunity
for growth upon their return.
“While
our Loaned Executives each bring unique talents to the
United Way table, they share a passion
for learning, flexibility, a willingness to commit four
months to helping their local community, and a desire for
new experiences.
During this four-month period, they are able to enhance
existing skills and develop new assets to help them in
their business
careers, such as public speaking, account and program management,
and a variety of skills they can lean on throughout their
careers.
Their
enthusiasm and expertise create an incredible atmosphere
during campaign season. Without them, United
Way would be unable
to provide full services to its many corporate partners.
We are grateful to their employers and to each of our
LEs for
their commitment to this program!”

Coordinator of the Loaned Executive
Program
The LE program also provides a feeling
of personal growth and an experience that would not have been
available in their current position. It is four months that
really make a difference.
“It
is great to wake up in the morning and be excited to
go to work, knowing that you are going to
make a difference! Working for a non-profit is an eye-opening
experience from the high level of dedication of the UW
staff, to the hundreds of ECCs and Campaign Cabinet members,
to the
hands-on, value-add that the United Way brings to the whole
community. I am honored that my company, Lockheed Martin,
supports the United Way by loaning me to this important
initiative.
Now, that’s Living United!”
Kathleen
Hohenadel
Loaned Executive - Lockheed Martin
“The Loaned Executive experience has opened
my eyes to very specific needs in our community and the great
work being done to address them. I am honored to be able
to help the United Way raise funds during this time of
critical
need so that we can continue to advance the common good.”
Joe
Gardner
Loaned Executive – Vanguard
“I’ve
really enjoyed
my experience at United Way so far. Working with the
Community Impact team,
I’ve been able to see how much need there is in our
region. Even more impressive is how many people are willing
to help
those in need.”

Brown Brothers Harriman - Discovering the Power of a Snack
 |
| Brown
Brothers Harriman employees stuffed 355 snack bags in one afternoon, to be distributed
by United Way among four area non-profit agencies. |
In today's economy
many agencies are struggling to keep the doors of their programs
open. Something as simple as providing
an afternoon snack to a child or disabled adult can become
a luxury to a struggling agency. To the rescue - Brown
Brothers Harriman who conducted a snack pack food drive out
of their
Philadelphia office for their United Way Kickoff event.
Employees at Brown Brothers Harriman purchased a variety of
snack foods
such as potato chips, pretzels, and candy then spent the
afternoon together, making up hundreds of snack bags. The
United Way, via the Gifts in Kind Program, will distribute
the snacks to Project Home, Grand as Parents, Christ Lutheran
Community Development, and Programs Employing People. Thank
you BBH!

Penn’s Way Kick-Off Luncheon
Campaign Co- Chairs, Maureen (Moe) Rush and Susan Phillips welcomed guests to
the University of Pennsylvania and Health System’s annual Penn’s
Way campaign kick off luncheon September 30. The event, held
in Houston Hall, Class of ’49 Auditorium, started with a meet,
greet and eat for the volunteers, administrators and representatives
of a variety of charities. Among the guests, Robert C. Hornik,
Ph.D., Professor, Annenberg School for Communication, Chair-elect
Faculty Senate, University of Pennsylvania.
University President Amy Gutmann in her
address referenced the recent news and web sensation Phillies
story where a little girl threw a souvenir baseball back onto
the field that she had just received from her father. Instead
of chastising his daughter, she noted, he hugged her. Dr. Gutmann
called this a true example of caring, and encouraged all in
the room to emulate that act by generously giving to the campaign,
suggesting that by doing so, they would also exceed their 2008
Campaign Goal of $1.2 Million.

S. (Moe) Rush, M.S., CCP, Vice President for Public Safety,
and Susan E. Phillips, Senior VP for Public Affairs,
who serve as Penn’s Way Campaign Chairs, listen to Dr.
Guttmann’s remarks. |
Speaking on behalf of Penn Medicine, Dr. Peter D. Quinn, DMD,
MD, Vice Dean for Professional Services, Senior Vice President,
University of Pennsylvania Health System and Professor and
Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology
at Penn’s School of Dental Medicine, started with a bit of
self-deprecating humor, “My position is like the manager
of a cemetery, there are many people under me and no one
listens.” He balanced his address by stressing the specific
needs of the community, particularly for this year when many
are suffering from the economic downturn, and the importance
of everyone giving as much as they can.
Jill Michal, President and CEO, United
Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, summarized the increases
in calls to food banks, hotlines requesting help on finances
and foreclosures, and the dramatic rise in the number of parents
having to remove their kids from daycare as a result of the
effects of the economy. She then expressed her strong appreciation
to Penn’s Way for its commitment to the community.
Another guest speaker, Wanda Cooper, Director
of the University of Pennsylvania LIFE Center, related how,
at the age of 16, she watched her father cry when he had to
make the decision to place his mother in a nursing home. This
life altering moment made her choose service to the elderly
as her life’s work. She said every day is one of satisfaction
in that she knows she is improving the lives of hundreds of
seniors and providing much needed services through the center
to make their lives more fulfilling.
