Aqua America Takes Campaign to New Heights

Through increases in its corporate donations, and Leadership and employee giving, Aqua America’s United Way Campaign surpassed last year’s by 11 percent for a total of $105,810!

The success of this campaign is in large part due to the passionate efforts of Employee Campaign Chairs (ECCs) Karen Carlson and Lisa Mosher. Dedicated to running a successful campaign, the dynamic duo took several steps to spread the word and create excitement about United Way.

They identified ambassadors across the company to increase personal interaction with the employees and assist with gathering all the paper pledge forms. With support from President and CEO Nick DeBenedictis and Roy Stahl, Chair of the Leadership Campaign, Karen and Lisa met with Aqua America’s leadership team to promote the value of donating $1,000 or more.

The ECCs also visited all of Aqua America’s sites in the region – with pretzels in hand - to rally the employees around the importance of giving and volunteering to make a difference in our local communities. Thanks to Karen, Lisa and Aqua America for a fantastic campaign!

KPMG LLP – Helping Others to Get Back on Their Feet

Employees of KPMG LLP started out running, and never looked back until they had driven their 2009 United Way Campaign total up to $358,057; an 11 percent or $34,616 increase!

With nearly half of their number participating in the campaign, an increase of 7 percent over last year, KPMG employees under the leadership of Office Managing Partner Jerry Maginnis were offered several additional ways to help their community. Among them, a chance to take part in the official campaign launch, which included a fun run/walk in collaboration with the non-profit organization Back on My Feet. It was a great opportunity for everyone to see for themselves the difference the organization is making in the lives of its members.

The 2009 Campaign Committee took a different approach this year by expanding the committee to include representatives from different functions in the office. This helped them gather more perspective on how to get the message out more effectively and encourage more employees to participate. To add a little more excitement and fun, the Committee raffled off Sixers and Flyers tickets each week of the campaign. They also held two Jeans Days where employees who had contributed to the campaign were allowed to wear jeans to work. Those who had not contributed could make an individual donation in order to participate. The funds raised during these two events were then donated to Back on My Feet.

The company also offered a Happy Hour for the function with the highest participation over 75%. In addition, the 2009 Campaign Partner Champion spoke about the campaign at partner meetings and sent bi-weekly status updates to the company’s partners, resulting in an increase in the number of leadership donors of $1,000 or more.

Morgan Lewis Blasts by Their Participation Goal!

Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP set an ambitious participation goal of 65 percent for its partners, associates and staff for their 2009 United Way campaign. If they met this goal, every Friday in January would be a Jeans Day. Not only did they surpass this goal, reaching an astounding 71 percent participation, but they surpassed the amount raised over 2008. The generous employees donated more than $450,000!

Managing Partner Gordon Cooney, Partner Nate Andrisani and Employee Campaign Chair Karen Caldwell, shown here, strategized on how to get as many employees as possible to participate in their 2009 United Way Campaign. Raffles, pretzel sales, kick-off and leadership events, along with regular communications, kept the momentum going throughout the campaign.

Deloitte’s Unique Community Investment – A True Measure of Success

Deloitte works with the United Way as their premiere partner for year-round community investment, including volunteerism, board training, pro bono initiatives, and most directly through the Campaign.

The people of Deloitte’s Greater Philadelphia office pledged over $504,209 in the 2009 United Way campaign, a $70,000 increase over last year and an all-time high for their local effort. Nationwide, Deloitte continues to rank #1 for Tocqueville giving, demonstrating a commitment to local communities that is an integral part of the Firm’s culture. Deloitte also pays the administrative fees associated with gifts to the United Way, enabling 100% of employee dollars to reach the intended non-profit.

For the second year, Deloitte’s campaign was led by a cross-functional United Way Leadership Council of firm Partners who in turn led Councils within each of their functions, with representatives from each employee level. This enabled peer-to-peer conversations where employees were educated and encouraged to give by those who walk in similar shoes.

Deloitte kicked off the campaign with a unique lunch-and-learn session. A United Way executive opened the program by addressing key points suggested by the Leadership Council. Multiple firm leaders then spoke briefly on behalf of the non-profits where they invest their time and dollars, to demonstrate the work and measurable impact of the United Way across the region. Colleagues were very interested to hear directly from the leaders. Additional efforts included weekly email updates, weekly raffles, and ticket give-aways.

From a leadership perspective, Tara Weiner, Managing Partner-Greater Philadelphia Region, Deloitte LLP, consistently and passionately sent targeted messages to motivate giving at leadership levels. As a result of the Leadership Council and Tara’s encouragement, the Partners raised more than $368,000 for the campaign.

The true measure of the campaign’s success is its connection to Deloitte’s year-round community involvement and partnership with the United Way. Deloitte’s 11th annual IMPACT Day, which is aligned with the United Way’s 365 Days of Caring, will take place on June 11, 2010 with 1,000 volunteers and nearly 30 projects throughout Greater Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania Lumbermens Wraps Up a Howlingly Successful Campaign

Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company capped off their highly successful three-week campaign with a costume party held, appropriately enough, on October 30. The PLM United Way Campaign raised almost $40,000 which included employee donations and funds raised through various fun activities held throughout the Campaign. In addition, their CEO authorized the company to match employee donations by $1.25 for every $1 donated by employees who had previously given, and $2 for every $1 donated by employees who were first-time donors. Altogether, PLM raised $106,513, representing a 4.9% increase over its 2008 total!

PLM consistently has a high participation rate, and this year was no exception, with 89.4 percent of employees participating. The Campaign Committee, led by Maria Lubbers with help from Jacqueline Ryan and Marcelle Chamavonian, also organized a Halloween party on the last day of the campaign. The event, which included pizza and prizes for the top three entrants, was a fun way to wrap up PLM’s 2009 United Way Campaign!
