Green
Tree School Transforms Its Campaign!
It all started with an amazing transformation of a children’s play room into
a campaign meeting area. Tables and chairs were set up and
banners and posters were hung along with colorful balloons.
Green Tree
School’s United Way campaign was underway. Soft pretzels were
served while the campaign captains received Phillies t-shirts
and hats designed to identify their status throughout the campaign.
Following a presentation by Laila Goldberg of The Food Trust,
Dr. Herman Axelrod, Executive Director, officially launched
the campaign with his remarks and Mr. Bill Goldschmidt, Education
Director, wrapped things up for the day. Attendance was fantastic
and everyone was enthusiastic about the United Way Campaign
(and the pretzels). The Green Tree School successfully raised
$4,622 which represents a 70% growth over their 2008 Campaign.
What an amazing effort by Green Tree!

Pennsylvania by 54% for a total contribution of $77,000! Blank
Rome’s 2009 campaign featured Ambassador training (for all

of caring where volunteers completed special projects in the
community, and many more unique events, all designed to raise
awareness of the campaign and the needs of the community. Led
by Chairman Carl Buchholz, the Blank Rome team spread energy
and enthusiasm for the campaign throughout the firm for yet

Dragons Slay Previous Campaign Total by 14.7%!
Drexel University & Drexel University College of Medicine raised over $88,372 during its 2009 United
Way Campaign, an increase of $11,340 over 2008. Under the leadership
of C.R ”Chuck” Pennoni, President of the University, professors,
physicians, administrators and office staff, dug a bit deeper
this year realizing that the need was much greater.
Drexel University is known for its commitment to the community. Their annual
Turkey Drive distributed over 1,400 turkeys to 39 organizations
to make sure that all could celebrate the holidays with a hot
meal. During Turkey Drive Day, Chestnut Street between 31st
and 32nd was a buzz of activity. The recipients started to
pull up in their vehicles at 9:00 a.m. as more than 65 volunteers
were waiting to help them load the turkeys. This year, United
Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania donated 400 turkeys in partnership
with Drexel. Everything was completed in less than three hours.
In addition, Drexel donated student furniture, computers and
unused supplies left by departing students to local neighborhood
agencies.
This partnership between Drexel and United
Way was also reflected in their annual United Way Campaign.
Special thanks to Deborah Rizzo, Director, Contract Compliance
and Administration for her planning and execution of a textbook
campaign.

Thomas
Jefferson University and Hospitals Breaks All Records!
Under the Leadership of Mr. Thomas Lewis, CEO, Thomas Jefferson University and
Hospitals, and Robert Barchi, M.D., Ph.D., President, Thomas
Jefferson University, its 2009 Campaign rose to new heights
with a whopping $229,029. This was a $40,643 increase or 21.6%
more than its 2008 Campaign. Special thanks to Mr. James Robinson,
Chief Administrative Officer, Methodist Hospital of Jefferson
and Diane Pirollo, VP, Community Relations & Foundation Development, for their efforts in the Campaign.
Kudos to E. Jane Hix, Esq., Associate Counsel, Office of General Counsel, who
served as the Employee Campaign Chair, and who oversaw the
entire campaign. Without Jane’s efforts, they would not have
been as successful. Jane believed that a lot of folks were
grateful to have their jobs and realized that others were much
less fortunate. It was this commitment that made them so successful.
“It’s really satisfying to know that when all is said and done
that you have actually helped another person in a time of need,”
she said.
This was the second year that Jefferson
Hospital went to an electronic pledging system and the first
for Methodist. Everyone agreed that the campaign went very
smoothly.

Students
Volley for a Cause!
Each year, members of Temple University’s Beta Alpha Psi fraternity hold a volleyball
tournament to benefit United Way. The fraternity, whose members
include Christina Kowal, president, Christopher Parsons, Sol
Frias, Quincey Layaou, Kayin Huang, and Lauren Peffley, has
been holding this fundraiser for United Way for the past 12
years.
Organized independent of the University, these energetic students execute the
tournament from start to finish. This year, they had nine different
teams participate in the competition. The students from the
fraternity teamed up with professionals from different accounting
firms around the area including: Philadelphia CPA Review, Becker
CPA, Deloitte LLP, KPMG, Ernst & Young LLP, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, Grant Thornton LLP, ParenteBeard and
Amper, Politziner & Mattia, PC. The creative members of Beta
Alpha Psi even created t-shirts
to
promote
the cause. The Beta Alpha Psi Annual United Way Volleyball
Tournament is fantastic example of another creative way that
the people of Southeastern Pennsylvania LIVE UNITED!
Even the rainy day couldn’t prevent the
group from raising $800 for the United Way of Southeastern
Pennsylvania. What a fantastic effort!

Bryn Mawr Trust Builds Awareness!
Let’s face it, 2009 was a difficult year! The unemployment rate was at an all
time high and many companies closed their doors, but Bryn Mawr
Trust Company (BMTC) knows just what it means to LIVE UNITED.
This year BMTC raised almost $26,000 in their 2009 United Way
campaign. Despite the tumultuous economic times, employee giving
increased its campaign by 26% over 2008!
Key to this successful campaign? Communication. Ted Peters, CEO, called upon
his officers for their participation; Bobbie Miller, Vice President
of Marketing, sent emails to build awareness and create excitement;
and Anita Harris, employee campaign chair, made numerous phone
calls to colleagues urging their support.
What's a campaign without some incentives?
Up for grabs were American Express Gift Cheques and a Garmin
GPS. In the end, though, the true winners were the men and
women of Bryn Mawr Trust Company, who stepped up to improve
the lives of families in their communities. Their participation
rate increased to 52% - up 18%!

Penn’s Way Campaign Exceeds Goal!
The University of Pennsylvania and Health System raised $1,371,566 for its 2009
Penn’s Way Campaign. This was $58,759 or 4.5% more than its
2008 Campaign and exceeded its goal by $171,566! This result
was in large part due to the leadership of Dr. Amy Guttmann,
President of the University, and Mr. Ralph Muller, CEO of the
Health System. The campaign was planned and executed by Campaign
Co- Chairs, Maureen (Moe) Rush and Susan Phillips. Kudos to
all who worked on the Campaign including Robert Eich, Administrative
Coordinator and Terri Welsh, Penn's Way Consultant and Director,
Trustees' Council of Penn Women, for the University, and Administrative
Fellows, Malika Maddison-McKenzie and Kristina Patterson for
the Health System. One of the key elements for the successful
campaign this year was the use of the Cawthorn and Haas Match
Programs for Leadership Giving, 3-year step-up pledge programs,
which were stressed during their various leadership meetings.

Philadelphia International Advisors and UWSEPA - A Long Term Investment
Philadelphia International Advisors, LP, is an investment management firm that
focuses solely on managing international equities. Their strength,
according to their investment philosophy “lies in their consistent
discipline of investing for the long term.” Recently PIA continued
their commitment to making sound long term financial decisions
by holding a campaign for United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
The decision to continue their partnership with United Way
led to perhaps the most important financial investment of all
for PIA; an investment in the people who live in our community.
Philadelphia International Advisors took the 2009 campaign very seriously. By
raising $24,208, the company not only managed to increase
their total
campaign by 49% but achieved that total with fewer employees
than in 2008. PIA also maintained their 2008 participation
rate. Amy Lieb, the 2009 Employee Campaign Chair, credits the
success of this year’s phenomenal campaign to both the top-down
support and leadership as demonstrated by their senior management
team, as well as to United Way CEO Jill Michal’s
inspiring speech to the executive staff. The addition of the
Southeastern Pennsylvania area to Philadelphia International
Advisor’s investment portfolio will help to advance the common
good for all for years to come. What a fantastic effort in
a tough financial world.
