CIGNA Campaign Soars!

CIGNA flew past the quarter-million-dollar mark once again in its United Way Employee Campaign, with the final report coming in at $290,090 - a minimum $22,829 or 8.5% increase! CIGNA ran an extremely effective campaign in its Philadelphia, Horsham and Blue Bell locations, with Employee Campaign Chair Brian Evanko leading the way.

The campaign committee scheduled several different activities to build excitement and opportunities to communicate the United Way message of LIVE UNITED. They added to their fundraising total with a myriad of special events such as "Casual Days," bake sales, and art auctions. They also hosted an agency fair with 10 participating agencies, promoting competition between office floors with the winning floor receiving free lunch, created Floor Leaders to reach all employees, and organized a very successful Leadership Gathering with direct messages from CIGNA CEO Ed Hanway, UWSEPA President Jill Michal, and John McDonald, CEO of the non-profit agency Impact Services. CIGNA also designed a "Family Feud" style game show featuring senior executives competing against one another on survey questions that CIGNA employees had answered through an online survey.

Calling on the Reserves - at the Federal Reserve Bank!

Under CEO Charles Plosser's leadership, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia's United Way Campaign exceeded last year by $4,502.61 or 2.0%. Much of the credit goes to the hard work of their Employee Campaign Co-Chairs, Greg Fanelli and Tom Lombardo and the other members of the team including Bill Stone, First Vice President and Ann O'Brien, who organized a talent show, karaoke, and several fun games such as bowling and bean bag toss. The final total is an impressive $20,000 more than their goal!

Jacobs' Halloween BBQ Sparks Their Campaign!

A Halloween-themed parking lot barbecue with all of the trimmings helped kick off the United Way Campaign at Jacobs, and the ensuing excitement throughout the campaign culminated in a 24.8%, or $5,513 increase! The kick-off, organized by Employee Campaign Chair Tina Reese, Project Expediter, and the Campaign Committee, began with a presentation to the management team that included a speaker from United Way and one from a partner agency. Carl Bergsten, Vice President of Philadelphia Operations for Jacobs, also addressed the employees, providing his enthusiastic support for the campaign. Weekly trivia questions, give away items and incentives for donations completed a well-planned, successful campaign that showcased the generosity of the Jacobs employees.

Public Health Management Corporation's Successful Campaign - Naturally

Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) kicked off their 2008 United Way Campaign at their annual staff meeting at the Merriam Theater with more than 800 in attendance! In addition to hearing Campaign Chairs Jamie Arehart and Robin Thomas speak on behalf of the campaign, employees also heard directly from a client of PHMC and their PIRIS program, which supports victims of gun violence - and which directly benefits from United Way dollars. Jill Michal, President and CEO of United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, was also a guest speaker.

In the weeks following the kick off, employees earned incentives including a two-hour time credit, or a chance to win a night's stay at the Hilton Hotel or free family passes to the Camden Aquarium and the Franklin Institute. Employees also enjoyed a raffle party on October 24, where hundreds of PHMC donors stopped by to celebrate and to enjoy healthy, fun snacks.

PHMC co-branded their United Way campaign this year with a new look and tagline: Public Health - It's in Our Nature. To market their campaign, employees were provided with a postcard and a compact, high-impact tri-fold brochure sporting the new look and tagline. Those who gave to the campaign were provided with branded magnets, which were placed on their door frame - to recognize them as donors.

While PHMC is already enjoying its most successful campaign to date, employees continue to give. PHMC expects to announce their grand total by the end of November - giving everyone an opportunity to donate to this year's United Way Campaign.

PNC Enjoys Hearing The Golden Voice

The love of sports, and especially football, was the driving theme at PNC Bank's United Way Leadership event. Bill Mills, CEO and President of PNC, coached his Leadership Team with the help of the Voice of the Eagles, Merrill Reese. Assistant Coaches, Employee Campaign Chair, Frank Pugliese, and Campaign Vice Chair, John Bott, were the dual forces behind this year's successful campaign. PNC's Employee Campaign is currently at $290,530. That's 13% better than their 2007 Campaign! This is truly an exceptional performance and is testimony to PNC's commitment to the community.

Bill Mills, an avid football fan, whose past life included a few first downs on the gridiron, said that baseball and hockey tended to fill in the time until the real sport, football, starts in the fall. During his turn at the microphone, Merrill wove team spirit and growth into his speech, and noted how recently recruited players also have some very impressive educational credentials. He drew an analogy to the PNC Team that not only runs a very successful United Way Campaign, but also does so much great work for the community throughout the year.

L.F. Driscoll Company - Where Campaign Leadership Begins at the Top

CEO leadership proved to be the catalyst for a huge increase in the L.F. Driscoll Company's United Way Campaign this year, resulting in a 60%, or $14,789 jump in the total raised for 2008! CEO Jack Donnelly sent a company-wide email reminding employees about the embodiment of community involvement. In addition, he personally spoke to some executives to ask if they would consider pledging. Employee Campaign Chair Laurie Wallace added some fun to the mix, throwing a barbeque for the employees where it was announced that several incentives were being offered to encourage participation in the campaign. In addition to a variety of gifts, employees who pledged a gift equal to a day's pay received an additional day off.

At HP Hood Penn Maid, Change Wasn't Just Good - It Was Great!

By adding just a few changes to their United way Campaign, HP Hood Penn Maid increased its giving total by 325%, or $3,281, to $4,739 in 2008! The campaign, organized by Employee Campaign Chair Loretta Crump, Human Resources Manager, and strongly supported by Plant Manager Ron Nelson, ran a thorough campaign that included a special meeting where all employees were given an opportunity to hear from a representative of United Way and from a representative of one of United Way partner agencies. The company also created and displayed a poster with the members of management on it, all dressed in their LIVE UNITED t-shirts.
