Days of Caring
2008 Campaign Kick off

Wednesday morning, September 10, a legion of eager volunteers slowly starts to spread across the region. Teams, small and large meet at various locations throughout the area excited to start work on more than 225 community improvement projects as part of the 2008 United Way Days of Caring – the Kick Off of the 2008 United Way Campaign.

Armed with rakes and shovels, paint brushes and hammers, the volunteers put in a long day of hard work helping over 200 non-profit organizations in the area. Chaired by Joseph Frick, President and CEO, Independence Blue Cross, John S. Mengucci, Vice President and General Manager DoD Systems, Lockheed Martin, and Ashley McEvoy, President, McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the two day event provided over 7000 volunteers the opportunity to rebuild playgrounds, create beautiful gardens, cut brush, clear debris, read to children and make a day special for a senior citizen throughout Philadelphia, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware Counties.

UWSEPA’s Campaign Cabinet
The Super Sixty

Led by Chairman Tony Conti, Managing Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Vice-Chair Rosemary Turner, Vice President UPS – Metro Philadelphia District, these volunteers spend many long hours throughout the campaign helping to form and implement strategies to ensure that the 2008 Campaign is a success. They are community leaders, business partners and executives from throughout the region who reach out to corporate, civic and labor leaders to encourage greater participation in the Campaign.

Their tireless effort and insight help the campaign stay strong and focused. United Way salutes their dedication and commitment. Thank you Campaign Cabinet.

Setting the Campaign Pace!

While the official campaign kick off was on September 10, there are several organizations who got an early start to their campaigns. These are our Pacesetter Campaigns. The Pacesetters “set the pace” and lead the way for a strong start to the campaign. Look for an update on our Pacesetters, including first timers - Citi Bank and PRWT Services in our next edition of Good News.

Initial Pacesetter results from Vanguard, annually our largest contributor and a strong supporter of the Community Impact Fund, report that 99.5% of the 202 Vanguard Officers participated in the campaign and have increased giving by 15%, with over 81% designated to the Community Impact Fund. Vanguard definitely knows what it means to LIVE UNITED.
