ACE INA Shatters Its Goals! When ACE INA decides to set a goal, watch out! And when the company asked Shira Rosenwald, Employee Campaign Chair of its 2007 United Way Campaign to lead the effort to reach that goal, her unstoppable charge produced a winning campaign with a nearly $30,000 increase! First, Shira and Eden Kratchman, Executive Director of the ACE Foundation, gathered the campaign's floor coordinators and laid out their plan of attack. Training included ACE campaign specifics and the United Way Community Impact message to help the coordinators fully understand the work of United Way in their communities. The company's campaign kick-off event featured the Salvation Army serving soup in the cafeteria - always a draw! Then, employees were presented with a positive and compelling story from an instructor and a client of the Associated Services for the Blind, who related a personal story of how the agency helps clients build an independent lifestyle and makes a positive impact for those living in a sightless world. A critical ingredient of this year's campaign was the focus on leadership giving. Brian Dowd, President of ACE INA, Holdings, believed that sharing the United Way message with his senior team might help broaden the understanding of the United Way mission and goals. A lunch was scheduled, United Way CEO and President Alba Martinez was invited to address the leaders and, voila! The number of leadership donors jumped from 28 to 45, an increase of 61%! Total employee contributions climbed from $163,790 to $193,349, an 18% increase! Congratulations to the entire ACE team for their commitment. Way to go! COO Donna Palmieri supervised an enthusiastic campaign team, whose members all attended the United Way Employee Campaign Chair Orientation at Citizens Bank Park, where they learned all the best practices for conducting a United Way campaign. This high-performance team included Ray Slater, Director of Planned Giving; Barry Williams, Director of IT; and Debbie Smith, Executive Assistant. This year's campaign kicked off at an all-staff meeting hosted by CEO Tom Foley, who provided a ringing endorsement along with breakfast and raffle prizes. [back to top] Duane Morris Vaults To a New Record!Duane Morris LLP, a center city full-service law firm, shattered their 2006 United Way Campaign record, bringing in $270,640. This 13% increase represents more than $31,000 new dollars in 2007! Under the able leadership of Employee Campaign Chair Margie Abrams and Leadership Chair Grant Rawdin of Wescott Financial Services, a financial services firm of Duane Morris, the campaign generated a lot of buzz and a great deal of excitement within the walls of their building. At their Leadership kick off Harold Carmichael, former Eagle star, was the guest speaker. Again this year, the campaign featured a tantalizing bake-off featuring sweet treats concocted by Duane Morris employees. A professional chef was enlisted to sample and judge the entries and awarded the winners with appropriate ribbons. Then, all the treats were sliced and sold to benefit the United Way campaign. Raffles and a silent auction captured the imagination of the Duane Morris staff, associates and partners. Who could resist the lure of techno-gadgets, artwork, restaurant certificates, golf and more? More than $7,000 was raised through the raffle and silent auction. Congratulations to Margie and Grant and thank you to Sheldon Bonovitz, Chairman of Duane Morris, for his unwavering support of United Way and the community. [back to top] FMC Corporation's Stunning Performance! It seemed, not so long ago, that a 96% participation rate in the United Way Campaign of 2006 was going to be FMC Corporation's best performance yet, but that record fell this year when 97% of the corporation's employees stepped forward, donating a total of $422,000. This represents a whopping 28%, or $96,077 increase over their 2006 total! Part of this donor increase can be directly attributed to the campaign plan, which included two "floor captains" who personally contacted each employee. In addition to the fantastic participation rate, a pledge from President/CEO William Walter for a company match also helped to send the campaign higher. Mr. Walter offered a 2-to-1 match for the increased amount of any pledge that grew 10% or more. Employee Campaign co-Chairs Graham Wood, Vice President and Controller, and Marty Kisliuk, Director, Global Supply Chain, also planned a special breakfast for Leadership level givers of $1,000 or more, with a presentation by United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania President and CEO Alba Martinez, and a general campaign kick-off that included a presentation by Caring People Alliance. The addition of special gift incentives added to the campaign's excitement. [back to top] Pennsylvania Horticulture Society Grows a Winning Campaign! You probably know that the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society, under the leadership of CEO Jane Pepper, manages the largest indoor flower show in the world, but did you know that it also produces a United Way Campaign result that might just turn others green with envy? This year, employees of Parkway Corporation completed yet another successful campaign with a 23% increase in total giving! A direct reflection of a dedicated campaign team led by District Manager Charles A. Newkirk, great sponsorship from senior management, including CEO Joseph S. Zuritsky, wonderful incentive prizes and competitive interdepartmental challenges, this year's campaign jumped $11,478 to a total of $60,400! [back to top] NBC-10 Breaking Records!Employees at NBC-10 brought in their 2007 United Way Campaign at an all-time high, breaking records in donations received and in participation! The employees raised an amazing $50,098, which parent company General Electric matched with an additional 40%. The grand total of $70,137, representing an increase of $12,057 over the company's 2006 campaign, can be attributed to an outstanding participation rate of more than 75% and increased Leadership Giving. The campaign kicked off with a Leadership Luncheon hosted by President Dennis Bianchi and featuring presentations from United Way President Alba Martinez, and Jac Ferber and Harold Barrow, representing United Way partner agency AchieveAbility. As an additional attraction, the event included a silent auction of items such as a BOSE speaker system, a digital camera, tickets to sporting events, and a MP3 Player. NBC's success was led by Mr. Bianchi, HR Director Kim Zachary and the entire campaign team: Annemarie Oswald, Elizabeth McGuigon, Elizabeth Kelley, Melissa Moroney and John Johnson. Many thanks to NBC-10 for its ongoing support of the United Way of Southeastern PA. [back to top] Nordstrom Rack's Outstanding Increase! How much are employees willing to give for a day off? Just ask Nordstrom Rack Store Administrator Manuela Tice! On its way to a 98.3% increase over its 2006 campaign total, employees held a live auction where popular shopping days such as the day after Thanksgiving and the day after Christmas were auctioned off to the highest bidder. Tice, who served as the Campaign Chair for Nordstrom Rack's annual campaign, also spearheaded other activities such as selling whipped cream pies for employees to toss at management members, and renting a dunk tank. Under the leadership of Store Manager Laura McIndoe, Nordstrom Rack raised a total of $10,548, including $1,300 in proceeds from the auction. Ms. McIndoe stressed how important the United Way campaign is to the Nordstrom family and said that in addition to benefiting the community, the campaign served as a way to promote team building among the employees. [back to top] Perfecseal Campaign Perfectly Packaged! When it comes to leadership, Perfecseal is not resting on its laurels as a global leader in the healthcare and pharmaceutical packaging market. Instead, the company and its employees have shown that they also rank among the leaders in the 2007 United Way campaign! A 22% increase in total giving, for a campaign total of $12,886, proves that great things come in packages of all different sizes! A specific focus on getting the United Way message out to nearly every employee went a long way toward helping to support the campaign. Employee Campaign Chair Susan Paul made a tremendous effort to make sure that happened by setting up five separate kick-off sessions at different times throughout the day in an attempt to reach the entire staff of the company's 24-7 operations. Representatives of United Way and some of its partner agencies spoke at each session, accompanied by Site Manager Benjamin V. Trave. [back to top] For more information on these stories go to
