Cheyney University: Where The Spirit of Giving Flourishes!A phenomenal increase of 302% in the Cheyney University Campaign is just the start of the wonderful story that recently took place at the state organization. The State Employee Combined Appeal campaign raises funds for the community from employees across the state of Pennsylvania. Here in Southeastern Pennsylvania, there are more than 130 state agencies that participate, and Cheyney University is no doubt one of the leaders when it comes to strengthening their campaign. The increase, from $2,082 to $8,370, was a direct result of a huge increase in the number of employees who became engaged and added something from their own spirit of giving, raising the number of donors from eight in 2006 to 64 in 2007! The Campaign Team attributes much of this success to their efforts to address their fellow employees one-on-one, for a more personal approach, and to their commitment "to meet the challenge," according to Employee Campaign Chair Barbara Simmons, JD, Assistant to the President for Internal relations. In addition, the team opted for a victory celebration, to be hosted by Cheyney University President Michelle Howard-Vital, at the campaign's conclusion. "No one would have imagined the level of success that was achieved," Ms. Simmons stated. Campaign Associates included Etta Baldwin, Seronette Barnes, Ph.d., Elisabeth Burton, Donna Howard, Brenda Lavender, John Williams, Ph.D., and Ramona Dixon, campaign accountant. The team noted that Tyrone Eleby, a Loaned Labor Leader for SECA, was of considerable help to the campaign. The campaign, which raised $82,475, was led by Campaign Chair Alicia Daugherty, Manager, NERC and Regional Coordination, and Co-chair Patty Cory, Senior Consultant. The campaign kicked off on September 13, 2007 with a leadership presentation to the PJM management team at the Villanova Conference Center. Ken Silvious, Campaign Director, accredited the achievement of this year's campaign to the remarkably dynamic campaign committee and significant management involvement. PJM is led by President Karl Pfirrmann, a historically active member of the United Way community. Thank you to PJM for their help in making our community a better place - because that's what matters! [back to top] Tardy Employees Grow Unum Provident Campaign!Creative planning has led Unum Provident, an insurance firm located in Wayne, to substantial campaign growth. The firm of 65 employees has supported the United Way campaign annually, continually inventing creative ways to raise funds. This year, the campaign kicked off early with great interest and enthusiasm amongst the employees. "We did a lot of neat things this year to keep the employees engaged," says Amy Rullo who coordinated the campaign. "We had bake and pretzel sales, loose change jars, a 50/50 raffle, candy guessing games and not to forget the good old pledge card came in handy as well." Employees who were late to staff meetings made donations to loose change jars! All these efforts resulted in Unum more than doubling their campaign results from 2006 when they raised $1,674 to $3,622 this year! The growth of this campaign is truly remarkable and congratulations are due to Unum Provident for their efforts and continued support of the United Way campaign. Great job! [back to top] America's First Zoo Runs First-Rate Campaign! The Philadelphia Zoo, America's first zoo and among the finest... of course, we'd say that even if they didn't run a great United Way Campaign! Last year's campaign, led by zoo President Vik Dewan, was a good one; but this year is even better... with $11,555, employees achieved a 36% increase, far surpassing their goal of $9,000! The Campaign, organized by Employee Campaign Chair Kelly Poulson, included an invitation for United Way to staff a table at the Zoo's employee health fair. The fair was held in a tent at the Peacock Pavilion while the large birds strolled the grounds outside. It was a great way to turn the tables, putting humans on display and the animals on the outside looking in! [back to top] Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation!Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation generously offered a challenge grant of $50,000 to the United Way of Southeastern PA for the 2006 campaign.
