Days of CaringOn Saturday and Wednesday mornings, Sept. 15 and 19, thousands of volunteers gathered together across the region and began transforming the community. Site by site, playgrounds and recreation parks, senior centers and homeless shelters were cleaned, rebuilt, painted, gardened, pruned and altogether spruced up. Volunteers entertained residents at a nursing home, and read books to children. Boxes of books were organized into a school library. Under the leadership of co-Chairs Joe Mengucci of Lockheed Martin, Jim Devine of MidAtlantic Employer's Association and Joe Frick of Independence Blue Cross, project after project was completed. The goal of 4,500 volunteers was left far behind when an amazing 5,300 volunteers showed, surpassing last year's numbers by nearly 2,000. As they finished their work toward the end of the day, a tremendous sense of accomplishment swept through them. There was pride in their work, but even more so, there was pride in a community whose members could, and did, exemplify the absolute strength you can find in volunteerism.
[back to top] UWSEPA Campaign CabinetVolunteerism is the core of United Way, and we were able to get to this exciting launching point of the 2007 Campaign through the dedication of numerous leaders from our community who are serving on the UPSEPA Campaign Cabinet. Led by Chairman Matt Espe, CEO of IKON Office Solutions, and Vice-Chair Tony Conti, Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, the members of the Cabinet (listed at right) are directing what is expected to be another record-setting campaign. These 66 volunteers are just the tip of the iceberg, making up the core group of a much larger effort that includes more than 10,000 volunteers who are the real reason UWSEPA was able to celebrate the best campaign of a generation last year, and why the future continues to look so much brighter. With every effort they put forward on behalf of the campaign, the payoff for the community is even larger, ensuring the continued growth of sorely needed resources. [back to top] Loaned ExecutivesIn addition to our terrific volunteers, we also have the honor of hosting a large group of Loaned Executives (LE), provided by businesses and organizations that have "loaned" their talent to us for the duration of the campaign. That's right; the generosity of the "loaning" companies extends over four months, as the LEs (see photo) put their energies into making the United Way Campaign a success. UWSEPA has more than 1,000 accounts that contribute to the campaign, and without the Loaned Executives we would not have the power to touch each and every one of them, to let them know how United Way is working to assist those in need. The efforts of co-Chairs William "Bill" Graham of Lockheed Martin, James Gately and Bert Dalby of Vanguard, combined with the support of Tracy Carter, also of Lockheed Martin, carried the program this year with 27 Loaned Executives now going out into the community on behalf of United Way. Drexel University generously sponsored the week-long, intense training session for the Loaned Executives for the third year in a row. Loaned Executives currently on loan, working on the United Way 2007 campaign, are (from left): Joanna Hutton-Hogg, Vanguard, Bernadette Braxton-Sample, United States Postal Service/Combined Federal Campaign, Lisa Baglivio-Kreider, Vanguard, Robert Geyer, Lockheed Martin, Kimberly Brooke-Neff, sponsored by Sovereign Bank, Wanda Preston, Federal Reserve Bank, Virginia Stewart, Labor & Industry/State Employee Combined Appeal (SECA), Beth Wallace, CFC/SECA Admin., Barbara Hubley, sponsored by IKON, Marcella Taliaferro-Reaves, sponsored by McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Yvonne Williams, LE Admin., La-Tisha Alston, Vanguard, Stacey Weikel, Vanguard, Sharaii Johnson, Vanguard, Festo Okidi, sponsored by Wachovia Bank, Keshia Nedd, Vanguard. Rohm and Haas Company is sponsoring two additional Loaned Executives. [back to top] PacesettersAlthough the 2007 campaign just kicked off, some of its best supporters have already been working hard to bring resources into our community through our Pacesetter Campaign. Under the guidance of Pacesetter co-Chairs Tim Buckley of Vanguard and Joe Banner of The Philadelphia Eagles, 13 businesses in the community started their campaigns early, leading all other participants in setting the pace for the rest of the 2007 Campaign. Early results are fantastic, and in our next edition of Good News we expect to have some very exciting news, but we can't wait until then to tell you about Yellow Book. It's a brand new participant in the United Way Campaign, and already it has become a powerhouse partner with results already over $114,000! The Vanguard Group has already generated more than $316,000 new dollars...campaign continues. Henkels & McCoy has concluded its campaign, up 27% over last year. Women Against Abuse is 63% over its 2006 campaign, and Liberty Property Trust is up 46%. These are inspiring and very encouraging early steps to the 2007 Campaign. [back to top] Employee Campaign Chair TrainingMore than 200 Employee Campaign Chairs have attended the ECC Orientations offered by UWSEPA through the months of August and September. The sessions are designed to support Employee Campaign Chairs by providing them with the knowledge they need to run a successful, fun, exciting campaign. There is still time to sign up for the last session! September 27, 1:30 p.m. - 4 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA. Please RSVP Celine Kadoo at 215-665-2625 or email at ckadoo@uwsepa.org.

Tracy Carter has been a partner with United Way for several years now, and rejoined the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania as a volunteer in April 2007, supporting her fellow Lockheed Martin executive William "Bill" Graham, who is co-chairing the Loaned Executive Recruitment Division of the 2007 Campaign Cabinet with James Gately and Bert Dalby of Vanguard. The strength of the Loaned Executive Program has a direct effect on the outcome of the overall United Way campaign, and its importance to the health of the community cannot be stressed enough. Recruiting for this program is one of the more difficult tasks that we ask a volunteer to take on; asking corporations to "loan" an employee to United Way for four months. Working alongside Bill, Tracy devoted her time and energy toward building the Loaned Executive Program to its current level - more than 30 individuals annually. Her diligence was key to the success of this year's program, which in turn provided UWSEPA with the resources necessary to carry out its goals on behalf of the community. Tracy also supported United Way in recruiting John Mengucci to the United Way Board and then assisted with Days of Caring - helping to recruit and deploy over 5,300 volunteers for projects that transformed our region. The relationship between Lockheed Martin and UWSEPA has experienced a resurgence over the past few years, and Tracy is the person responsible for this exceptional collaboration. Her extraordinary work for United Way is driven from the heart - a personal commitment - because she truly cares about her community.
