Smaller Companies -- Huge ImpactWhen United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania set its $54 million goal for the 2007 Campaign, many eyes turned toward the larger organizations that anchor the campaign year after year. Without these companies, there would be no way to reach this aggressive new goal. UGI/AmeriGas Employees Meet The ChallengeIn an effort to encourage increased participation in the 2007 United Way Campaign, UGI/Amerigas CEO and Chairman Lon Greenberg issued a challenge: If the UGI/AmeriGas employees increase their participation, the company would increase its corporate gift by $20,000. The challenge was met with 87% of the 302 employees making pledges, leading to a campaign total of $412,771. This is $37,375 more than their 2006 total. In addition, the 20 members of the Campaign Committee, led by Employee Campaign Chair Joe Geeter, Corporate Employee Relationships Manager, and Leadership Campaign Chair Kathy Prigmore, General Manager, put together the "perfect" campaign. Their plan included exciting incentives such as Get-Away vacations, lotteries for a day off, and job swaps with management team members. One very lucky employee even won a 40-hour vacation! CEO Bob Turner, who volunteers as Division Vice Chair for the Investment Division on UWSEPA's Campaign Cabinet, ensured that his own company's campaign remained strong, setting a vigorous example for other companies to emulate. Employee Campaign Chair Jill Homan, Manager, made a point to personally ask her colleagues to participate in the campaign. Bob also provided his own personal touch, speaking on behalf of the campaign at two large employee meetings. Two agencies were asked to speak at the meetings, to share how United Way Community Impact dollars helped their organizations. It was a heartfelt ask and a heartfelt response, reflecting part of the company's mission statement -- "To our community and society: a commitment to activism to see the communities and society in which we live prosper."[back to top] Quaker Chemical's Growing ChallengeParticipation was key to the huge growth in Quaker Chemical's 2007 United Way Campaign.
