Non-Profit Agencies - The Heart
of the Region!
The heart of any region lies in the social fabric that binds individuals,
families and communities to one another. It is the health and human
service agencies, partnering with United Way, that address those areas
to ensure that many of the people who might need some extra support
do not fall through the cracks. These agencies generally run on very
tight budgets, their work is hard, constant, never-ending and can at
times seem insurmountable. And yet, each year they take the time and
make the effort to generously donate and deliver some of the strongest
campaigns in the southeast region of Pennsylvania.
This year, their campaign
results have been absolutely outstanding with percentage increases
reaching double-digits pouring in from big
and small agencies located all over the region!
- Among the strongest, Visiting Nurse Association of Greater
Philadelphia's
Employee Campaign Chair Gary Grayshaw reported a 61% increase for
a total of $30,573. Gary explained that the VNA's campaign,
approved by President Stephen Holt, "focuses on food and giveaways," with
food-centered events such as free-coffee-and-doughnut day, deeply
discounted hoagies at $1 a slice, "snack attacks" of
chips or granola bars, also $1, and pizza and soda for $1.50. Candy
gift bags are distributed
along with the pledge forms. This is truly a food-lover's
effort!
- ECC Gloria Miranda of Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Inc.,
put together a campaign that increased 43%, for a total of $22,870!
Nicholas
Torres, Congreso's president, congratulated the agency's
employees, "I
often get asked what makes Congreso unique and I often reply it's
because Congreso staff understand that our work is not just a job,
but it's
a service. You demonstrated this again through your commitment
to United Way. Without United Way we could not serve our community
and
without
Congreso, United Way could not make a difference in communities.
Thank you again for investing in Congreso and United Way and ultimately
in
our clients."
- Then there is the Jewish Family and Children's
Services agency that put in that extra effort to strengthen their
campaign by 115%
to $6,219! "Raising interest and excitement about the United
Way's annual campaign was the first step in raising funds," said
explained ECC Donna Blyzniuk. The agency kicked off their workplace
campaign with a breakfast reception for employees. They also offered
incentives for the two departments that had the most participation,
such as free lunches, gift certificates to TGI Fridays, and "blue
jeans" days. They kept staff updated about the campaign's
progress via e-mail and distributed United Way balloons and key
chains as reminders. According to JFCS President/CEO, Jack Dembow, "JFCS
employees understand and appreciate the importance of supporting
the United Way. Our fundraising efforts reflect our ongoing commitment."
- At
Philadelphia Health Management Corporation, the number of Leadership
level gifts of $1,000 or more has continued to grow.
They added four
new leadership pledges for a total Leadership gift of $66,390,
which means Leadership level giving now makes up more than half
of their
campaign total!

Volunteerism and Generosity High
on PNC Bank's List!
It is a 10.3%, $27,495 overall increase so far for the PNC Bank
2007 United Way Campaign! PNC kicked off its campaign with a Leadership
event at Lincoln Financial Field for donors of $1,000 or more. More
than 100 attended to hear guest speakers former Eagles quarterback
Ron
Jaworski and our very own Alba Martinez, President and CEO of United
Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, set the tone for the event which,
in turn, set the pace for the rest of the campaign. Leadership Giving
grew by 32.3% and 24 new leaders! Total raised to date - $293,859,
and of that amount, $257,232 was pledged directly to UWSEPA. Including
the corporate gift, the total campaign exceeded the $500,000 mark!
PNC Region President J. William Mills III is also a volunteer for
United Way as a member of its Campaign Cabinet, where he holds the
position of Division Chair. PNC's campaign included a variety
of activities throughout its campaign, such as participation in last
September's United Way Days of Caring, when the employees worked
to build libraries for youth at two local agencies. Kudos to Liza
Kozak, Chair, Frank Pugliese, ViceChair, the PNC Committee and the
Management Team!

Departments throughout
the Vanguard campus hold their own United Way Campaign
events
to raise funds
and have some fun. In the Goliath Building, teams competed throughout the week
in seven different events such as basketball, Name That Song,
and Pictionary. The six teams with the highest point scores
each sent a representative to the "Fifth Annual Wing
Bowl," a chicken wing eating contest. The six contestants
were joined by a "mystery" contender who turned
out to be Steve Herrmann, a department manager.
Contestants, including their
nicknames, are: Stephen Graham - "Jean Claude Van Graham," Nick Puleo - "He
Ate Me," Doug Patrick - "Fresh Chicken," Steve
Herrmann - "The Cowboy," Frank McMaster - "Frank
the Tank," Eric Deissler - "Wild Wing," and
Debbie Nelson - "Dangerous Deb." Nick Puleo is the
4 time reigning champ.

Walnut Street Theater United Way
Campaign Aging Beautifully
America's oldest theater proved once again this year that
age does not necessarily mean slowing down. The Walnut Street Theater's
2007 United Way Campaign grew nearly half again over its 2006 Campaign
by raising $4,100, a 47% increase! Employee Campaign Chair Lara Faust
led the effort for the theater now operating under the direction
of CEO Bernard Havard.

FM Global's Historic Rise!
FM Global's 2007 United Way Campaign in Malvern, PA, came
in with its largest increase in its giving history! Spearheaded by
Employee Campaign Chair Suzanne Maniscalco, the campaign grew from
$7,091 to $8,480. In addition, the company, whose Malvern location
is led by James R. Baldwin II, V.P. of Operations/Regional Manager,
very generously provides a two-to-one match for every dollar pledged
by an employee. This resulted in an even bigger total - $25,440 -
and an overall 60% increase or $9,553! Our gratitude goes out to
Ms. Maniscalco and the entire FM Global organization for their outstanding
generosity and continued support of United Way and the community.

A Truly Main Line Campaign
The Main Line Health 2007 United Way Campaign hit a new high this
year, raising $185,911 thanks in large part to the leadership of
Jack Lynch, CEO, and Mike Buongiorno, Executive VP and CFO. This
total is $21,875 or 13.3% more than their 2006 campaign results!
The company has also extended a prediction that next year the campaign
will be even more successful once the transition of the newly acquired
Riddle Memorial Hospital is completed.
The same enthusiasm evidenced in the campaign was also seen when
over 250 Main Line Health staff participated in the 2006 Days of
Caring. Their hard work at Cobbs Creek Park clearing brush and doing
other projects, combined with their efforts in Lower Merion Township,
were some of the best organized projects of the entire day. Main
Line Health employees also visited the homes of senior citizens in
Ardmore, PA to do special prearranged projects, such as painting
or trash removal -- made so much more meaningful since these
were everyday chores that these residents were either physically
incapable of doing or could not afford to have done. That's
what matters.
